MODE was the project architect for a number of the locations, in the Department of the Prime Minister & Cabinet (DPM&C) managed, Aboriginals Benefits Account (ABA) Stores Infrastructure Project, which aims to upgrade and construct new community stores and manager’s housing in 18 communities across the Northern Territory.

The project was part of the ‘Closing the Gap’ strategy to improve living conditions in remote indigenous communities.

MODE have provided architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and graphic design services for those in:

  • Areyonga

  • Bulla

  • Bulman

  • Canteen Creek

  • Epenarra

  • Haasts Bluff

  • Papunya

  • Peppimenarti

  • Yuendumu

The majority of stores are indigenous owned businesses and a key source of food, drink and grocery items for local communities. The type of store is relative to the size of the community and can vary for communities from populations of 250 to more than 1,500 people.
