HOW WE WORK

MODE delivers projects through a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach that connects people, expertise, and ideas across disciplines, sectors, and regions.

Working with government agencies, institutional organisations, developers, contractors, operators, and private sector clients, we tailor our approach to the unique requirements of every project, balancing design quality, stakeholder needs, operational objectives, and long-term value.

Through our CONNECTED BY DESIGN philosophy, MODE brings together architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, urban design, master planning, and graphic design to create integrated solutions that respond to community, culture, climate, and context.

CONNECTED BY DESIGN IN PRACTICE

MODE's CONNECTED By Design representation

CONNECTED BY DESIGN is more than a philosophy, it is how MODE works.

Rather than operating in separate disciplines, our teams collaborate from the earliest stages of a project, sharing knowledge across sectors including aviation, education, health, sport and recreation, commercial, hospitality, defence, transport infrastructure, community, and multi-residential development.

This cross-sector collaboration enables MODE to identify opportunities earlier, improve coordination, strengthen stakeholder engagement, and uncover greater value throughout the design process. Insights gained from one sector often inform innovative solutions in another, creating environments that balance user experience, operational performance, sustainability, commercial outcomes, and long-term community benefit.

By connecting people, places, ideas, and expertise, MODE creates environments that are thoughtful, adaptable, and enduring.

This integrated approach allows teams to:

  • Improve project coordination and communication

  • Identify risks and opportunities earlier

  • Align stakeholder and user requirements

  • Integrate built form, landscape, interiors, and wayfinding from project inception

  • Support sustainability and long-term resilience

  • Deliver more efficient and effective project outcomes

The result is a more connected design process that creates lasting value for clients, operators, users, and communities.

PROCUREMENT & DELIVERY EXPERIENCE

MODE works with government agencies, institutional organisations, developers, contractors, operators, and private sector clients across Australia and New Zealand. Our experience spans a broad range of procurement and delivery models, allowing us to adapt our methodology to project complexity, stakeholder requirements, programme constraints, risk profiles, and operational objectives.

MODE has experience supporting projects through:

  • Traditional Delivery: Working directly with clients and consultant teams to develop design solutions from concept through to documentation and construction.

  • Design and Construct (D&C): Collaborating with contractors and project teams to deliver integrated solutions that balance design quality, buildability, programme requirements, and commercial outcomes.

  • Early Contractor Involvement (ECI): Supporting collaborative project development by engaging with contractors, consultants, and stakeholders during the early planning and design stages.

  • Public-Private Partnerships (PPP): Contributing multidisciplinary design expertise to complex projects involving multiple stakeholders, governance structures, and long-term operational considerations.

  • Managing Contractor & Collaborative Delivery Models: Working within integrated project teams to support project certainty, stakeholder alignment, risk management, and efficient project delivery.

  • Design Excellence Processes: Delivering design-led outcomes that balance innovation, functionality, commercial performance, and long-term community value.

Regardless of procurement model, MODE's focus remains consistent: creating high-quality, integrated environments that achieve the project's strategic, operational, and community objectives.

THE MODE APPROACH

Driven by the very definition of ‘mode’
“A manner, way, or method of doing something, experiencing something, or acting. A particular form or kind.”

MODE's approach is built on three principles: Manner, Method, and Form. Together, these principles guide how we collaborate, solve problems, and create enduring design outcomes.

MANNER

We believe collaboration and communication are fundamental to successful project outcomes. By bringing together clients, stakeholders, communities, and project partners, we establish a shared vision from the outset.

METHOD

Our multidisciplinary teams apply research, technical expertise, digital tools, and lessons learned across sectors to develop informed, practical, and innovative design solutions.

FORM

The result is architecture and design that responds to context, supports long-term sustainability, and delivers enduring value for clients, communities, and users.

OUR DISCIPLINES

MASTER PLANNING & URBAN DESIGN

MODE’s Master Planning & Urban Design team develops long-term spatial frameworks for cities, precincts, and communities across Australia and New Zealand. Working closely with disciplines such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Wayfinding, the team creates connected, people-focused environments that guide sustainable growth, land use, and urban transformation.

By integrating insights from sectors including aviation, education, health, civic, and residential development, MODE ensures each master plan is grounded in real operational needs and future demand.

This multidisciplinary approach improves outcomes by aligning stakeholder vision, enhancing urban liveability, strengthening connectivity, and supporting long-term environmental and economic resilience.

ARCHITECTURE

MODE’s Architecture team designs environments that balance function, experience, and long-term value. Working in close collaboration with Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, and Wayfinding, the team delivers integrated solutions across aviation, education, health, sport and recreation, commercial, hospitality, civic, defence, transport, and multi-residential sectors.

Through Connected By Design, architectural outcomes are shaped by cross-sector knowledge and multidisciplinary input from the earliest stages of design.

This approach improves outcomes by enhancing operational efficiency, strengthening user experience, supporting commercial performance, and delivering adaptable, future-focused environments.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

MODE’s Landscape Architecture team creates outdoor environments that connect people, place, and climate. Working alongside Architecture, Urban Design, and Wayfinding, the team ensures landscape design is fully integrated into broader built environment strategies.

Projects span education, health, civic, public realm, and infrastructure, with a focus on resilience, accessibility, and ecological performance.

This multidisciplinary approach improves outcomes by strengthening environmental sustainability, improving wellbeing, enhancing public amenity, and creating meaningful connections between built and natural systems.

INTERIOR DESIGN

MODE’s Interior Design team creates environments that enhance the way people live, work, learn, and interact. Working closely with Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Wayfinding, the team ensures interior environments are fully integrated within the broader design vision.

Projects span workplace, education, health, hospitality, aviation, and residential sectors, with a strong focus on user experience, wellbeing, and adaptability.

This multidisciplinary approach improves outcomes by increasing productivity, improving comfort and usability, strengthening operational performance, and delivering spaces that respond to changing user needs over time.

GRAPHIC DESIGN & WAYFINDING

MODE’s Graphic Design & Wayfinding team develops integrated visual communication systems that shape how people experience and navigate environments. Working across Architecture, Interior Design, Urban Design, and Landscape Architecture, the team ensures wayfinding and identity are embedded from project inception.

Projects include complex environments such as airports, hospitals, education campuses, civic precincts, and transport infrastructure.

This multidisciplinary approach improves outcomes by enhancing navigation, improving accessibility, strengthening identity, and creating clear, intuitive user experiences across complex environments.
