Griffith University Aquatic Centre | Mt Gravatt, QLD
As part of Griffith University’s strategy to upgrade their student and community facilities, MODE were commissioned to create a new Aquatic Centre at the Mount Gravatt Campus, integrated with an upgraded gym and indoor sports hall.
The redevelopment included replacement of this 25m, eight-lane outdoor pool, a fully-enclosed learnto-swim program pool, a children’s play pool, covered seating, café, administration areas and covered outdoor dining areas, as well as the refurbishment of the existing gym and provision of additional onsite parking.
The building is generated from the combination of enclosed and open spaces required by the various constituent parts, with an angled roofing plane originating over an intimate, enclosed scale around the control kiosk and café seating area, extending to a taller, open scale over the learn-to-swim pool area. The roofing plane angle of the existing fitness centre has been utilised to provide an overall sense of order and continuity.
A viewing area, open to the sky, juts out over an illuminated planting area, providing sweeping views over the sports fields below and through to the valley in the distance. A bold, doublestorey butterfly-form roof provides a clear statement of entry, with suitablyscaled covered waiting areas, stairs and PWD access facilities.
The facility is open to students and the wider community and offers a range of fitness activities for individuals and community groups, in addition to children’s holiday and recreation programs, to compliment the other recreational facilities on campus.
