CQU Electric Vehicle and Energy Training Centre | Mackay, QLD

The 2,250m² Mackay Electric Vehicle and Energy Training (MEVET) centre at CQUniversity Australia’s Mackay Ooralea campus provides a purpose-built environment for education and training in electric vehicle maintenance and new energy technologies.

Designed and delivered by MODE in collaboration with Woollam Constructions, the facility accommodates classrooms, training spaces, conference rooms, offices, student amenities and a double-height workshop.

The brief called for a cost-effective and highly functional facility, with efficiency and practicality driving the design response. Planning was optimised to establish a clear relationship between spaces, exposed structural elements and building services, creating a straightforward and intuitive environment while exceeding the University’s functional requirements.

This efficient approach enabled the inclusion of an additional classroom within the building. Simple materials and bright colour accents support wayfinding while introducing a subtle architectural character to the interior.

MODE worked closely with the consultant team and builder to coordinate the technical requirements of the facility, including specialist battery facilities. The result is an efficient and adaptable training environment that supports CQU’s operational needs and the evolving requirements of electric vehicle and sustainable energy training.
