192 Ann Street Rooftop | Brisbane, QLD

MODE’s landscape architecture team worked with Daisho Pty Ltd to create a rooftop garden that connects two prominent buildings in Brisbane’s Central Business District, being 192 Ann Street and the new 180 Ann Street Commonwealth Bank tower.

The designs feature significant areas of landscape to soften the surrounding urban environment, while working with false floors to achieve a design that is both practical and high amenity. Viewing platforms frame this open space with emphasis on views to King Edward Park and the centre of the city.

From the inception of the project, MODE was driven to create a space that was underpinned by three (3) guiding principles. 1 Compliance, 2 Functionality and 3 Amenity. This three-tiered approach was adopted to ensure that at every point throughout the design process, the design time acknowledged the need to ensure the space met the goals and requirements of each layer. This process became a fundamental review tool as the project evolved and the team faced functional and structural constraints.

Despite this, our team was able to deliver an inner city urban oasis that addressed the surrounding built environment and context. Our team prioritised key vistas, promoted subtropical and climate appropriate planting and provided shade and shelter to reduce potential ‘heat island’ effects.

This project provides a fantastic case study for the adaption, refurbishment and reuse of ‘left over’ urban spaces, proving to the client, council and the community that adaptive reimagining of our built environment is possible.
