As part of the Queensland Government Department of Health’s Building Rural and Remote Health Program (BRRHP), MODE delivered the Camooweal Primary Health Care Centre in collaboration with Hutchinson Builders.
The 800 m² facility replaces the previous clinic and staff accommodation, providing a resuscitation and treatment bay, decontamination and sterilisation areas, consultation and interview rooms, and multipurpose education spaces. Prefabricated as 22 modules at Hutchinson Builders Modular Yard in Yatala, the components were transported over 2,000 km and installed on site in a single day, enabling completion within 13 weeks.
This community‑driven facility shaped through direct engagement with local stakeholders, ensuring the building responds to the specific needs and values of the community. Feedback combined with the understanding of modular construction informed the spatial relationships, welcoming scale, and cultural identity resulting in a health care environment that feels accessible and grounded rather than institutional.
The building’s façade designed from local context and the community represents the Camooweal community through their connection to land. Internally, the layout is efficiently designed to deliver natural light to patient rooms while promoting clear circulation for patients and staff. A simple earthy palette of neutral and natural finishes enhances warmth and calm, reinforcing comfort and wellbeing for patients.
