Hans commenced his career in architecture after receiving a scholarship with the Queensland Department of Public Works, where he spent the first decade of his career delivering education projects before progressing to senior architect roles within the police stations and courthouses portfolio. This included leading the design of the Beenleigh Courthouse, introducing innovative planning approaches such as angled courtroom arrangements to improve efficiency.
He later established his own practice, Hans Van Wyk & Associates Pty Ltd Architects, continuing to deliver civic projects across regional Queensland.
Returning to government, Hans held senior leadership roles across multiple sectors, managing multidisciplinary teams delivering significant annual capital works programs. He was subsequently appointed State Delegate for architectural design and Director roles on major projects. Hans later held senior positions at Turner & Townsend, Brisbane Airport Corporation and Racing Queensland, and delivered the $350M Howard Smith Wharves redevelopment before returning to architectural practice with MODE.
