J Block

J Block is a 1000sqm refurbishment of a decommissioned motor mechanic workshop at Mt Gravatt TAFE

Client: Department of Housing & Public Works
Location: Mount Gravatt, QLD

Now home to Jigsaw, a social enterprise than trains and transitions people with disability into award wage employment, the interior concept centred on the inherent beauty of the industrial shell and reusing the existing building stock, including existing timber cladding along the perimeter walls to highlight the warehouse aesthetic. Exposed beams, 6m high ceilings and natural ventilation helped reduce the need for new building materials and therefore reducing waste, allowing the design team to focus on the important elements within the space. MODE also worked with DTM Timber, and Cape York Timber, an Indigenous social enterprise, to supply beautiful Darwin stringybark hardwood that envelops the reception and waiting area - sustainably sourced from the Kakadu region by Cape York Timber. New works include a bespoke workspace for 72 employees and associated support amenity; training and meeting rooms, utility, kitchen, breakout and reception with an innovative approach, meeting compliance to the NCC and Australian Standards.
