Hervey Bay Esplanade | Hervey Bay, QLD

Located along the Hervey Bay Esplanade overlooking the Coral Sea, the Hervey Bay Resort is conceived as a contemporary coastal destination that responds directly to its subtropical waterfront setting.

The project combines hotel accommodation, resort-style amenity, and activated public interfaces to create a vibrant hospitality precinct that strengthens the connection between the built environment, landscape, and surrounding coastal character.

The architectural concept draws inspiration from the natural beauty and geomorphology of Hervey Bay. Organic forms, layered landscaping, and sculptural building elements reference tidal dunes, coastal erosion patterns, sail-like forms, and the movement of wind and water across the shoreline. This design language creates a fluid architectural identity that responds to both climate and place while establishing a distinctive presence along the esplanade.

The development is designed to enhance the public realm through an active and highly permeable ground plane. Landscaped communal areas, hospitality interfaces, and outdoor gathering spaces contribute to a destination-oriented environment that supports both visitors and the wider community. A strong emphasis has been placed on creating a seamless relationship between internal and external spaces, reinforcing the relaxed character of coastal living.

The built form transitions from softer, landscape-integrated podium elements to more expressive upper-level forms that capture long-range views toward the Coral Sea. Subtropical planting and shaded outdoor environments are integrated throughout the development, contributing to microclimate moderation, visual amenity, and resident comfort.

MODE’s scope included the architectural design and coordination of the project, bringing together planning, built form, and environmental responsiveness into a cohesive hospitality outcome. The project reflects MODE’s integrated approach to design, balancing experience, climate, landscape, and urban activation to create a contemporary resort environment that is both locally responsive and destination-driven.
