The School of Science refurbishment reimagines a traditional, enclosed cellular office layout into a dynamic open-plan environment that supports contemporary modes of teaching, research, and collaboration.
The project responds to changing academic work practices by creating a more open, connected and adaptable environment for postgraduate students, researchers and academic staff.
The existing layout consisted predominantly of enclosed offices and segmented workspaces, limiting opportunities for interaction and informal engagement. The design sought to improve connectivity across the School while maintaining a balance between focused work, collaboration and academic research activities. Through the careful reconfiguration of the existing floorplate, the refurbishment introduces a range of flexible work settings that support different ways of working and learning throughout the day.
A mix of shared workspaces, quiet focus areas, meeting rooms and informal collaboration zones provides users with greater choice and flexibility. Integrated breakout spaces and gathering points encourage spontaneous discussion and knowledge sharing, helping to strengthen relationships between students, researchers and teaching staff. Improved visual connections across the workplace contribute to a stronger sense of community while enhancing opportunities for interdisciplinary engagement.
The design also prioritises occupant wellbeing through increased access to natural light, improved sightlines and a more open internal environment. Material selections and workplace planning support a contemporary and welcoming atmosphere that reflects the University's commitment to innovation, research and learning.
The result is a more agile and connected academic workplace that supports the evolving needs of the School of Science, creating an environment that encourages collaboration, knowledge exchange and future-focused research.
