Featuring Blackbutt timber, the new terraced stair incorporates integrated seating platforms, providing an opportunity for staff and students to work collaboratively and engage socially.

Working within the existing library atrium at Edith Cowan University, MODE were engaged by builders Renascent to provide a new feature presentation staircase within the library.
The D+C project format meant MODE would work closely with the construction team to work within tight boundaries of the site to provide a innovative design to meet the strict budget and program, in order to meet ECU’s requirements.
Built-in booth style seating nestled beneath the stairs utilises the space to provide additional spaces to work in small groups without impeding on the surrounding circulation space.
The rich colours of the blackbutt timber are reflective of ECU’s choice to incorporate natural materials internally and continues the design aesthetics throughout the building. The inclusion of a green colour scheme to the booth seating provides pops of colour and is reflective of the universities colourful campus schemes, and Western Australian forrests.
