Wynnum State High School - New Learning Centre | Wynnum, QLD

The New Learning Centre at Wynnum State High School is a compact double storey GLA with four GLAs and a resource centre on the upper level, amenities, and with an open undercroft on the ground level.

The GLAs on the upper levels are divided with operable walls on two sides. These operable walls allow two-four GLAs to be combined into a variety of larger learning spaces to suit the School’s needs. The building is located in the northern eastern corner of the school overlooking the adjacent park and couple of heritage listed trees.

The tree protection presents an interesting challenge to the design as the columns needs to be located away from the root zone. This results in an intricate trussed roof structure highlighting the building entry.

The sunshades are custom designed to exclude glare while maximising external views during school hours. The metal screens have folded edges to increase spans, greatly reducing the amount of steel framing required.
