AVEO Brightwater | Brightwater, QLD

MODE’s design of Aveo’s Brightwater, initiates discussion around achieving design excellence that incorporates resort lifestyle living for retirees. The project brief outlined by Aveo, proposes a high quality seniors retirement development including seniors dwellings, Community Centre, 24/7 staffing and security.

MODE’s proposed vision intelligently allows access to a high level of amenities to deliver an outcome that is appealing and sellable. The project aims to achieve at its core, community integration and an ‘openness’. Multiple green spaces at varying scales are provided to encourage social interaction or respite, and a diverse range of activities or rest.

A sense of openness and autonomy is promoted with distinct way finding techniques including light and sound, safe pedestrian walkways horizontally and vertically to all floors, high levels of passive and casual surveillance, and connections to existing facilities outside the village.

The ability to function independently is well recognised and has been incorporated to improve sense of self and wellbeing. ‘Out of the way’ spaces that cannot be ‘discovered’ easily tend not to be used, even in smaller, clustered layouts—an idea that can be used in multiple ways, to support social connection or to create semiprivate zones within more open social areas.

This fine grain is intended to be adopted across the site with a more detailed analysis of the pedestrian pathways and open spaces. These options aim to provide appropriate intellectual and sensory stimulation. Moderate sensory stimulation can promote engagement in activities and can minimise withdrawal. It is conceivable that environmental qualities such a light, volume, movement and smell are also key factors. We will aim to adopt these qualities within the proposal.
