The New Zealand Government released the Auckland Maximum Security Correctional Facility in 2014, as a PPP after the success of the Auckland South Corrections Facility PPP.

Auckland East Correctional Facility | Auckland, NZ
This facility is located within the existing Auckland Prison precinct, containing prisoners from every security classification (minimum, low, low-medium, medium, high, maximum) and also contains high, minimum and low security correctional facilities. The prison accommodates New Zealand’s most notorious and dangerous prisoners.
The facility is government operated and as such, the design and development of the project has been a collaboration between the New Zealand Department of Corrections and the Next Step Partners consortium in which MODE are Principal Consultants. Accommodating 260 prisoners, an additional 18-bed At Risk Unit is included for management of prisoners at risk of self-harm.
While the facility is designed for the highest security-rated prisoners in New Zealand, the design strives for a balance between meeting security and safety imperatives, while maintaining a therapeutic and dignified living environment.
The design also has a focus on community inclusion with several facilities optimised for official and unofficial visitors to participate in the rehabilitation of prisoners’ lives.
