MODE’s Bougainvillea Bridge Business Case
Revisiting the Bougainvillea Bridge: infrastructure as a destination
A recent update shared by Ross Elliott reports that funding has been announced for a business case for the Toowong to West End Bridge. The update provides an opportunity to revisit MODE’s previously developed Bougainvillea Bridge concept and the broader possibilities of a new river connection.
A crossing with a broader purpose
Developed by MODE to illustrate Suburban Futures’ vision, the concept asks how a bridge could serve as both transport infrastructure and a public destination.
Alongside walking and cycling connections, the proposal incorporates places to pause, gather, dine and experience Brisbane’s river setting. Sheltered, tendril-like forms and flowering bougainvillea give the concept a subtropical character, while viewing areas and potential café and restaurant tenancies provide reasons to spend time along the crossing.
At the southern landing, the concept proposes an amphitheatre, river stage and public plaza, extending its role beyond movement to accommodate performances and community gatherings.
Connecting movement, experience and opportunity
The proposal also explores how commercial activities could contribute income towards the infrastructure’s capital cost. These opportunities form part of a broader consideration of how transport, public space and community use might work together.
This thinking reflects MODE’s CONNECTED By Design philosophy: considering the relationships between different uses and experiences to identify value beyond a single function.
MODE acknowledges Suburban Futures’ continued advocacy for exploring these possibilities as discussion around the crossing progresses.
