From Forgotten Waterfront to a New Destination
From forgotten waterfront to a new destination for Brisbane's west
Our concept for Oxley Wharf at Rocks Riverside Park has been featured in The Courier-Mail. The concept explores how a long-forgotten stretch of Brisbane's riverfront could be returned to the community.
The wharf was built in 1937 to support cement production and has been fenced off for decades. Working with Suburban Futures and Urban Economics, MODE developed a concept to reuse it as a riverfront dining and events venue, with new public open space, landscaping and amenities across the surrounding park.
The site already sits within a strong local economy. About 180,000 residents, 68,000 jobs and 15,000 businesses are within 15 minutes, and residents spend more than $500 million a year on hospitality. Yet the western suburbs have few purpose-built venues for corporate and community events.
The proposal also explores how private investment could fund the public improvements while the land stays in public ownership. It's CONNECTED By Design in action, bringing architecture, urban design and landscape architecture together with heritage, public amenity and commercial strategy.
Thank you to Suburban Futures for championing the opportunity, Urban Economics for the research, and The Courier-Mail for sharing the story.
