Empire Theatre | Toowoomba, QLD

Built in 1911, the Empire Theatre is a heritage-listed art-deco performing arts venue forming part of Australia’s largest regional performing arts complex in Toowoomba, QLD.

MODE were engaged by Toowoomba Regional Council to deliver refurbishment works to improve functionality, accessibility and patron experience throughout the theatre complex.

Working closely with the client, MODE undertook a master plan review and reconfigured the existing 1996 renovation to improve the spatial planning of the bars, box office and front-of-house amenities. The refurbishment enhanced circulation, operational efficiency and equitable access for patrons and staff.

The completed works carefully incorporated the theatre’s rich history and architectural character, with art-deco inspired lighting, marble, brickwork and gold detailing tying the refreshed interiors together. The relocated main bar and box office now provide an improved and more accessible experience for all visitors.
